Excavation in Roebuck, SC

Most projects that go wrong go wrong underground, before anything visible gets built. The footing trench that fills with water and never drains. The driveway that was cut but never undercut, so it pumps and cracks by the second winter. The utility line that got found the hard way. Eastern Land Solutions provides excavation throughout Spartanburg, SC and the surrounding Upstate on residential, farm, and small commercial sites. We are a family-run outfit based in Roebuck, and we would rather spend an extra hour getting the subgrade right than come back next spring to fix what settled. The Excavation Work We Take On

Excavation is controlled digging — moving soil to a planned depth, line, and grade so that whatever goes in afterward sits on ground that will hold it. What that means in practice depends entirely on the project:

Trenching and utility lines — water, sewer, electric, gas, and conduit runs dug to line and grade, bedded properly, and backfilled in compacted lifts so the trench does not telegraph a sunken stripe across the yard. Trenching and utility lines

Foundation and basement excavation — footings dug to bearing depth on undisturbed soil, crawl space and slab prep, and full basement digs on the sloping lots this county is full of. Foundation and basement excavation

Driveway and road excavation — stripping, undercutting soft subgrade, cutting the base for gravel or asphalt, and setting culverts where the drive crosses a drainage path. Driveway and road excavation

The Piedmont adds two wrinkles worth knowing about before you get a price. Cecil-type red clay holds water rather than shedding it, so an open trench here becomes a bathtub after a storm. And partially weathered rock — saprolite grading into granite — turns up shallow across much of Spartanburg and Cherokee counties, sometimes at three feet, sometimes at eight. Both are manageable when you plan for them and expensive when you do not. Once the hole is right, grading and site preparation is what turns it into a finished site.

How We Run a Dig

We walk the site, figure out what has to be dug and how deep, look at where water currently runs, and give you a written scope and a firm number. Every dig gets a ticket filed with SC811 — state law requires at least three full business days for utility marking, and mechanical digging is prohibited inside the tolerance zone on either side of the marks. We build that waiting period into the schedule rather than treating it as an inconvenience, and we ask you separately about the private lines 811 does not cover: irrigation, well lines, septic, invisible fence, and landscape power. Topsoil comes off first and gets stockpiled, erosion control goes in before the ground is open, and we check the bottom of every excavation rather than assuming it — soft or saturated material gets undercut and replaced with compacted stone rather than built on. When rock shows up we stop, show you what we are into, and price the change before we swing at it. Nobody gets a rock surprise on the final invoice.

Serving Spartanburg, Greenville, Laurens, and Cherokee Counties

Our excavation work runs across southern and western Spartanburg County — Roebuck, Moore, Switzer, Una, Woodruff, Reidville, Duncan, and Startex — and up through Boiling Springs, Inman, Lyman, and Greer along the I-85 corridor. We work west into Greenville County and out to Easley, northeast to Gaffney, and south into Laurens County. Growth along I-85 and I-26 has put a great deal of new construction on ground that used to be pasture and pine, and a lot of that ground needs more dirt work than the buyer expected. See everything we do on the dirt side for how the pieces fit together.

Why Builders and Property Owners Choose Us

We are small on purpose. Michael, his son Marshall, and two long-time crew members run every job — no rotating subcontractor list, no crew you have never met showing up at your house. Twenty-five years on heavy equipment teaches things that do not show up on a bid sheet: how this clay behaves at depth, when a trench wall is telling you to stop, and how to get a machine into a back yard without destroying the yard to get there.

Clearing, grading, or excavating that disturbs one acre or more requires stormwater permit coverage from the SC Department of Environmental Services before work begins, and smaller sites inside a larger development plan can be pulled in as well. We tell you where your project sits relative to that threshold at the estimate, not after a stop-work notice. Free estimates, credit cards accepted, Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Get your project on our schedule or call (864) 999-3420.

Common Questions

We handle it and we wait the required three full business days. What we need from you is the location of anything private the utility companies will not mark — irrigation, well and pump lines, septic tanks and drain fields, invisible fence, and any line a previous owner ran without records.

Work stops in that area and we show you what we are into before anything else happens. Depending on the material the options are to work around it, break it, or redesign the depth — each with a different price that you approve before we go further.

Sometimes, but usually we should not. Red clay worked wet loses structure, compacts poorly, and pumps under load, and trenches in saturated clay are more likely to slough. We will tell you honestly when the ground needs a few dry days first.
